Kamaru Usman releases statement post Covington vs Lawler announcement

Ahead of his first attempt for a title defense, reigning UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman has sent out words to his potential opponent Colby Covington.

Covington’s mettle will be first tested against former welterweight division champ, Robbie Lawler and the schedule has been made, with the fight booked to take place in August in Newark.

But Usman would not wait to have his statement released ahead of a possible clash with Covington who had a great victory over Rafael dos Anjos in his last outing.

Usman jumped to the media, speaking with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto through his manager Ali Abdelaziz on the booking and a possibility to have a clash with Covington.

“I should be ready to go by November. Whoever Dana White says is next. He’s the boss. If Askren looks good and that’s who the UFC wants, he’s next.”

The Nigerian-born puncher conquered the much-coveted UFC elterweight title with a defeat to Tyron Woodley back in April following judges’ unanimous decision.

The ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ will sit and watch as he set to fight the former interim champ. Covington will be making a return to action for the first time since June 2018 after the UFC 225 where ‘Chaos’ handed down a sweet defeat to dos Anjos to win the promotions interim welterweight title.

Kamaru Usman has a tantalizing professional record with 15 wins and a defeat in as many fights. These include ten wins on the bounce under the UFC banner, including victories over tough opponents in Demian Maia, Rafael dos Anjos and Tyron Woodley.
