Alexander Volkanovski lost his top spot as the UFC rankings’ No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter at UFC 285. Despite entering UFC 284 as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, he lost to the No. 2-ranked lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, in a close decision but remained at the top of the list.
However, Jon Jones’ return to MMA as a heavyweight changed that as he defeated top-ranked contender Ciryl Gane at UFC 285, taking the top spot from Volkanovski.
In an interview, Volkanovski acknowledged that while he had been the pound-for-pound No. 1, Jones’ recent achievements make it hard to argue that he doesn’t deserve the top spot.
He believes that pound-for-pound rankings should reflect a fighter’s recent performances rather than past accomplishments.
