After a prolonged absence of over five years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is making its return to Charlotte. The mixed martial arts organization announced that come May 13, it will host a remarkable event at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The main event features a light heavyweight clash between Anthony Smith and Johnny Walker, which was formally confirmed after previously being subject to speculation.
The UFC hasn’t hosted an event in the city since Jan. 27, 2018, which saw battle-scarred Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza triumph over Derek Brunson via first-round knockout on FOX card: current bantamweight star Cory Sandhagen also made his debut with a second-round TKO of Austin Arnett.
The promotion’s most recent appearance in North Carolina was in Raleigh on Jan. 25, 2020. In the headlining event, Curtis Blaydes, a heavyweight, replaced former champion Junior dos Santos with a second-round TKO. A few additional bouts will reportedly be featured during UFC Charlotte. They include Matt Brown vs. Court McGee, Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Jailton Almeida, Mackenzie Dern vs. Angela Hill, and Daniel Rodriguez vs. Ian Machado Garry. The scheduling of the fights is still undecided, and thus, the bout order will follow.
