Jorge Masvidal doubts Colby Covington’s merit for a title shot due to concerns about his brain injury history

Jorge Masvidal, a highly skilled mixed martial artist, remains optimistic about his chances of securing a shot at the UFC title this weekend. In the previous month, Leon Edwards, the welterweight champion, defeated Kamaru Usman in their rematch at UFC 286, strengthening his grip on the 170-pound title.

Shortly after the fight, Edwards suggested that his next title defense might be against the winner of the UFC 287’s co-main event between Masvidal and Gilbert Burns, but Dana White, the president of UFC, refuted those thoughts by stating that Colby Covington, Masvidal’s rival, is the next in line. Masvidal, who has a long-standing feud with Covington, is unhappy with the decision.

During the UFC 287 media day on Wednesday, Masvidal expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that he holds three felonies because Covington claims that he gave him a brain injury, which is why he questions how Covington can fight for any title.

Masvidal believes that UFC will face legal action if anything happens to Covington in the ring. He added that Covington has a brain injury, as he is claiming, and believes that you cannot fight in such a condition.

Masvidal and Covington have a troubled history, which took a dark turn last year when Masvidal allegedly attacked Covington outside a restaurant in Miami, just a few weeks after losing to him at UFC 272. Following the incident, Covington claimed to have suffered a brain injury, and the trial is set for May 22 to resolve the matter.

Despite Masvidal serving as the co-main event of the UFC’s first Miami card in two decades, he is unconcerned if Covington attends or tries to stir trouble. Masvidal stated that Covington is an attention-seeking whore and thinks he will be present. Masvidal, however, does not care if he shows up since he has a restraining order on him, and he must remain 100 feet away from him.

Instead, Masvidal is focusing on getting the welterweight title shot that was promised to Covington. Masvidal has had a long history with Edwards, and as one of the biggest stars in UFC, believes that he can secure the shot with the right performance this weekend. He added that he does not underestimate anyone with two hands and feet, but he also thinks ahead of the game.
