Sources familiar with the bout have confirmed to MMA Fighting that former UFC champion, Jessica Andrade, is scheduled to fight Yan Xiaonan (16-3, 1 NC) at UFC 288 in Newark, N.J. on May 6th. Eurosport was first to report the match-up. Andrade (24-10), who was once crowned the champion in the 115-pound category, has been competing in both strawweight and flyweight classes for the past few years.
Andrade inclusion in both divisions in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings proves that “Bate Estaca” is a force to be reckoned with. However, her chances of clinching another title took a big hit when Erin Blanchfield submitted her in the second round in her most recent fight, ending her three-fight win streak.
The formidable Yan, on the other hand, managed to halt her two-fight losing spree with a majority decision victory over Mackenzie Dern during a UFC APEX event last October. She has had 7 wins out of 9 fights in the UFC so far, including impressive wins against Claudia Gadelha, Karolina Kowalkiewicz, and Angela Hill.
Aljamain Sterling, the bantamweight champion, and former two-division champion Henry Cejudo will headline the UFC 288 event. The scheduled bout promises to be a thrilling one, pitting two extremely talented fighters against each other.
With this announcement an exciting match between Andrade and Yan, as each woman will vie for the chance to eventually challenge the current strawweight champion, Rose Namajunas. However, there is no guarantee that the winner of this match will be granted a title shot. Nonetheless, with both fighters being in such an esteemed league, it’s certain that the bout will be riveting.
