Kevin Holland made a triumphant return to the winner’s circle at UFC 287, knocking Santiago Ponzinibbio out cold in the third round. Demonstrating his superior power throughout the bout, the highlight of the fight came at in the third round when Holland caught a kick and launched a lethal left hook, causing Ponzinibbio to faceplant on the canvas.
Referee Dan Miragliotta stepped in to stop the fight as Holland celebrated his emphatic victory. Holland wasted no time in calling out Jorge Masvidal, with whom he had several altercations leading up to the fight: “Hey Jorge, if you don’t want to retire after Gilbert Burns gets done whopping your ass tonight, I’d definitely love a chance for that BMF belt.
Holland used his reach advantage effectively to keep Ponzinibbio at bay with his striking arsenal. Despite Ponzinibbio’s quick hands and punishing leg kicks, Holland showed his power by dropping him with a back fist in the opening round. While Ponzinibbio was able to get back up quickly, Holland had made his point regarding his unusual strength.
The Argentinean continued to press Holland, but was unable to take control of the fight, despite his continued leg kick attacks. Holland only needed one clean shot to do some serious damage, which he delivered with a lethal left hook after catching a kick from Ponzinibbio. Although Ponzinibbio protested the stoppage, replays showed that the referee made the right call.
Holland will now be tracking the UFC 287 co-main event, keen to see if Masvidal will accept his challenge and set up a potential fight between them. Holland is clearly in great form, his lethal power and unconventional approach a threat to any opponent.
