According to Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, the announcement of the Gervonta Davis vs. Ryan Garcia fight has led to great optimism for the future. Ellerbe asserts that the fight promises a large live gate, which has already catapulted it to one of the top-10 in Nevada’s history, and an estimated sky-high pay-per-view outlook.
Ellerbe is supporting WBA regular champion, Davis, however, this fight looked like it was never going to happen due to a rivalry between promoters. Garcia, who is supported by Golden Boy Promotions and Oscar De La Hoya, has always been promoted by Mayweather’s long-time opponents.
But Ellerbe praises Garcia’s efforts to make the fight a reality inside the ring and believes that the timing is perfect since both fighters are in their prime. De La Hoya had earlier expressed excitement by signing his contract with Davis but Ellerbe states that the former boxer had little intention of getting the deal done. He believes that De La Hoya doubts Garcia’s ability to win against Davis.
Despite the conflict between De La Hoya and Mayweather, Ellerbe and De La Hoya are working together. They have put aside their personal issues, which Ellerbe describes as a “business” albeit with no animosity.
Although Eric Gomez and De La Hoya have done an excellent job with promoting Garcia, it is Ryan Garcia who has pushed for this fight. Ellerbe is confident that Davis will emerge as the victor and ultimately, become the face of boxing.
