According to sources familiar with the matter, bantamweights Cody Garbrandt and Mario Bautista are slated to compete at an upcoming UFC event, scheduled for August 19th, although the location for the card has yet to be determined. After enduring a challenging period that saw him go 1-5 over six bouts, including a brief stint at flyweight, Garbrandt got himself back on track in his last matchup.
Garbrandt secured a unanimous decision victory over Trevin Jones at UFC 285 in March, an outcome he desperately needed. Prior to those events, Garbrandt had held the UFC bantamweight title, but a series of losses cost him his place in the rankings, including two defeats to former teammate and rival, T.J. Dillashaw. Now, Garbrandt will be trying to gain some traction on the back of his latest victory over Jones.
Mario Bautista, on the other hand, is currently experiencing his own four-fight win streak, with submission victories in three out of four bouts. Most recently, he accomplished a first-round rear naked choke to Guido Cannetti in March. Garbrandt versus Bautista is the first confirmed fight for the August 19th event, as the UFC endeavors to finalize an ambitious summer schedule.
