The upcoming UFC 288 event has lost one of its fights, as the preliminary bantamweight bout between Daniel Santos and Johnny Muñoz Jr. has been dropped from the card. The removal of the fight follows an injury to Santos, whose nickname is “Willycat.” It remains to be seen if the fight will be rescheduled, as no timetable has been announced.
Santos, who is from Brazil and is 28 years old, had been seeking consecutive victories for the first time in his UFC career. He had notched a knockout win over John Castañeda at UFC Vegas 61, but suffered a defeat to Julio Arce in his UFC debut at UFC 273.
Muñoz, who has been with the UFC since 2020, has struggled to find consistency in his fights. He has alternated between victories and losses in his first four fights and was hoping to carry the momentum from a solid performance against Liudvik Sholinian at UFC Vegas 64 into this bout.
UFC 288 will go ahead as planned this Saturday, May 6, at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The headline bout for the night features bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling taking on former double-division titleholder Henry Cejudo.
