Demetrious Johnson’s future plans are not set in stone following the conclusion of ONE Fight Night 10. After winning his successful trilogy over Adriano Moraes, he expressed an interest in reaching out to numerous MMA greats, such as Urijah Faber, Georges St-Pierre, and Khabib Nurmagomedov, to gain additional perspective and knowledge about potentially retiring. He wants to know why they hung up their gloves, among other things.
Johnson is aware that time will catch up soon and he doesn’t want to give the opportunity to younger athletes to add to their legacy by beating him. He is 36 years old and believes this may be the right time to walk away from the sport. Although he reiterated that he had no intention of retiring seconds earlier, there are numerous reasons as to why he wants to consider regaining his place as one of the greatest of all time and continues to weigh his options.
He is hoping to get further insight on the situation before making a final decision. Although he received applause from the crowd when he teased the idea of coming back, his wife’s input may play a crucial role in his decision, and he wants to adhere to his values and beliefs, including his intuition.
One of the reasons he was having second thoughts about retiring was due to the training camps’ hardest times, especially during weeks four and five, resulting in unpleasant nightmares. These nightmares included not what he was going to do to his opponent but what he would do after retirement. These feelings were confusing, and he acknowledged that he needed to understand them to make the right choice.
The decision to retire or continue fighting comes with its fair share of emotions, including a lot of energy that Johnson would rather allocate to other projects that can take care of him after he retires. Therefore he plans on talking to the most important people in his life-his family-before arriving at a final decision.
