Cody Stamann was left in disbelief by the outcome of Saturday’s UFC Charlotte fight against Douglas Silva de Andrade. Referee Wayne Spinola’s decision to restart the fight on the feet after Silva de Andrade landed an illegal upkick on Stamann instead of allowing Stamann to return to the top position he was in prior to the incident, could have led to Stamann losing that round and the fight as a whole.
Stamann and Silva de Andrade’s tightly contested fight ended with Silva de Andrade being declared the winner, but it was the highly-controversial first round that has left many fighters frustrated and questioning the referee’s decision-making. Among those fighters in shock was Aljamain Sterling who believed that Cody had been wronged, while former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt expressed his disbelief, and Terrance McKinney threw in his two cents about the subpar referring at the event.
Bryan Barberena shared his disappointment regarding the referee’s decision that proved detrimental to Stamann’s performance, and Michael Chiesa called it inexcusable. Fighters like Belal Muhammad were heartbroken by the outcome of the fight, labeling it a robbery, while Renato Moicano shared his outrage at the judges.
Casey O’Neill, who was clearly biased, said she could not take it anymore, and coach Eric Nicksick pointed out the unfortunate side of UFC traveling to towns with less experienced athletic commissions.
