As the biggest star in combat sports, Conor McGregor has a lot to prove upon his return to the UFC. It has been close to seven years since McGregor made history and became the first simultaneous two-division UFC champion. Over the past three years, he has only won once, his victory being over Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone last year. McGregor has suffered consecutive losses to Dustin Poirier, leading to doubts about his chances to return to championship form upon his eventual return against Michael Chandler.
The 34-year-old Irishman has a record of 1-3 in his past four fights. Matt Brown, a UFC welterweight, is among the doubters who believe that “The Notorious” will not get back to his former championship form again. Brown claimed that McGregor wanting his name to remain in the news and his addiction to people loving him and his ego has led to his decline. Despite the possibility of McGregor ranking as a top-five contender if he defeats Chandler, Brown did not see McGregor beating any of the top-five guys.
During McGregor’s run at featherweight, Brown questioned his greatness even after the star’s 13-second knockout against Jose Aldo in 2015. The win, coupled with his title grab at lightweight, solidified his place among the all-time greats several years ago. However, coming off two back-to-back losses and long rehabilitation after a broken leg, Brown did not expect McGregor to reach his peak again.
Brown acknowledged that McGregor would still be a massive draw despite another potential loss. For that reason, McGregor would be in a separate category from almost any other fighter with a 1-4 record over five fights. Even if McGregor should lose his next match, he would still maintain his position as a massive draw at the box office. Although, Brown did suggest that other circus fights like those with free agent Nate Diaz may in the future just provide McGregor with a way to keep his name in the spotlight in the meantime.
