Garry Tonon, recognized for his exceptional Brazilian jiu-jitsu skills from the Renzo Gracie lineage, is set to make his comeback at featherweight during the upcoming ONE Fight Night event on July 14 at Bangkok’s Lumpinee Stadium. According to sources from ONE Championship officials, Tonon will be pitted against Shamil Gasanov in a highly anticipated match-up.
Tonon has earned a sterling reputation in the grappling circuit, where he clinched multiple championship titles before transitioning into mixed martial arts. Although he had a perfect win record of six consecutive victories, Tonon encountered his first loss via knockout in his initial attempt to take the ONE featherweight championship title against Thanh Le.
Tonon displayed extraordinary resilience and skill when he obtained a stunning first-round submission victory over Johnny Nunez in his most recent appearance. Tonon is looking to maintain this winning momentum when he makes his return to the ONE Fight Night stage in July.
On the other hand, Gasanov is seeking to achieve the most significant victory of his martial arts career when he faces Tonon. The undefeated Russian has amassed an impressive record of 13-0, including a dominant first-round submission win during his debut for ONE Championship last October.
Aside from the highlight featherweight bout between Tonon and Gasanov, fans can also expect an assortment of fights across different disciplines, such as MMA, Muay Thai, and grappling, during the ONE Fight Night 12 event. The organizers have confirmed several fights, while they are expected to announce more exhilarating bouts in the coming weeks leading up to the event.
