Amanda Nunes and Irene Aldana make weight for UFC 289 championship bout

The highly anticipated UFC 289 event is almost here, and all eyes are on bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes as she prepares for the first defense of her second reign. “The Lioness” secured the title from Julianna Peña in July and will now face Irene Aldana in the octagon this coming Saturday. Both fighters achieved the 135-pound championship weight at the official weigh-ins on Friday, with contender Aldana stepping to the scale first to confirm her readiness for the bout.

In the unlikely event that either Nunes or Aldana is unable to compete, there is a strong backup contender in Raquel Pennington, who successfully weighed in at 134.5 pounds. However, all signs point to an exciting event with the full card of 22 fighters ready to go.

Notably, co-main event lightweights Charles Oliveira and Beneil Dariush also successfully made weight and will be vying for the No. 1 contender’s spot. Oliveira weighed in at 154 pounds, while Dariush came in one pound over at 156.
