Mexicans in the MMA scene have had a successful 2023, with the possibility of Mexico becoming home to four UFC titles after UFC 289. The year began with Brandon Moreno reclaiming gold in the men’s flyweight division after defeating Deiveson Figueiredo. This was followed by Yair Rodriguez winning the interim featherweight strap with an impressive second-round triangle choke against Josh Emmett.
A month later, Alexa Grasso surprised Valentina Shevchenko to earn a fourth-round rear-naked choke victory in the women’s flyweight division. Now, it’s Irene Aldana’s turn to face Amanda Nunes as she aims to replicate the success of her fellow Mexicans. Former two-division champion Henry Cejudo believes that if Nunes cannot take Aldana down, the Mexican’s training and heavy-handed boxing skills may be enough to secure her the victory.
Aldana has finished eight of her 14 victories by knockout and three by submission, and Cejudo sees her confidence and powerful punches as a deadly combination for the legendary Brazilian. Cejudo believes the most important factor in this fight is confidence, and for that reason, he is picking Aldana to win.
In other news, the PFL 4 results saw Brendan Loughnane emerge victorious over Bruno Pinedo. Meanwhile, UFC president Dana White is undecided on whether the winner of the Beneil Dariush vs. Charles Oliveira fight will get a title shot, with Dariush expressing his disappointment at the lack of clarity. The upcoming UFC 289 event has generated lots of buzz, with Brazilian stars debating who will come out on top in the fight between Oliveira and Dariush.
