At UFC 289, Amanda Nunes defeats Irene Aldana and announces her retirement from fighting

Amanda Nunes has decided to retire at the pinnacle of her success in the world of MMA. The UFC’s sole two-weight champion made her announcement on Saturday, just after winning another title defense in a flawless performance during UFC 289’s main event.

Nunes dominated Irene Aldana with ease, and secured the sixth defense of her bantamweight belt during her two title reigns. She won the bout in a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it in her favour: 50-44, 50-44, 50-43.

Afterwards, Nunes said, “For so long, my mom had been asking me to do this and my partner, Nina [Nunes], has been with me for my whole career. She’s pregnant now, and we’ve been on this journey for so long. I’ve decided that I am still young enough to enjoy everything I have made.

I want to travel and be with my family. I left so young to come here and chase my dream. There was never a doubt in my mind that I would become a champion, but when I became a champion, it was unbelievable. A double champ as well.”

The 35-year-old fighter delivered an outstanding performance against Aldana, showcasing her dominance over the 135-pound division by landing 142 significant strikes, winning six takedowns and connecting 53% of her significant strikes. Although Aldana managed to land a well-timed counter right hand in the first round, Nunes quickly recovered and continued her assault.

Nunes exits the world of MMA as the most successful female fighter in UFC history and one of the most accomplished champions to ever don a pair of four-ounce gloves. She has made a name for herself as the only champion that Brazil currently has, and she expressed her gratitude as she said, “I came from a small city in Brazil, the name is Pojuca, nobody knows where it is in Brazil, but I made it here. I became a champion and the only champion that Brazil has right now… I’m leaving, thank you!”
