Julianna Pena expresses frustration over Amanda Nunes’ retirement at UFC 289

Julianna Pena was clearly unhappy when she saw Amanda Nunes lay her gloves on the canvas after UFC 289. Nunes won against Aldana after Pena was forced to withdraw due to a broken rib. This decision turned out to be crucial as Nunes used this win to announce that she was retiring as a two-division UFC champion.

Pena initially wrote, “I’ll take that as a compliment” before her tone changed and she added, “I scared you so bad into retirement. Personally, congratulations. Professionally, wtf was that?”

As Pena processed the news, she became more and more agitated, “Canadians don’t boo, they just walked out quietly before the fight was over.” She then added several hashtags to express her feelings, including “snoozefest,” “terrible,” “stinker,” and “ducking.”

In 2021, Pena stunned the world by defeating Nunes and claiming the bantamweight belt. However, in their second meeting, “The Lioness” dominated, battering and bleeding Pena en route to a unanimous decision with scores of 50-45, 50-44, 50-43.

Nunes improved on that tally again this time with a pair of 50-44 scores and one 50-43 mark. Nunes’ win was a high note for her to retire on and left Pena with a feeling of sour grapes.
