As the lightweight division heats up, who do insiders see as the most worthy opponent for Islam Makhachev

Islam Makhachev won the lightweight title last October and is now waiting for his next opponent for UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 21. Since his last fight, many changes have occurred in the lightweight landscape including Charles Oliveira bouncing back, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier set to fight again, and Alexander Volkanovski wanting another shot at Makhachev. Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor are also being considered for the next challenger.

Lee believes that Charles Oliveira deserves a second chance to face Makhachev for the top spot. Despite Makhachev outclassing Oliveira in their first meeting, he thinks Oliveira’s risk-taking, compelling fights, and unimpeachable resume make him well-deserving of the title shot. Furthermore, it would be more entertaining and fresher to see Makhachev vs. Oliveira.

On the other hand, Martin thinks that Oliveira’s recent win does not qualify him for an immediate title shot. Instead, he suggests waiting for the Poirier-Gaethje 2 winner, who will likely become the new flavor of the month, making them more compelling opponents for Makhachev. Meanwhile, Meshew thinks that the most viable business option for the UFC is to have Makhachev face-off with Conor McGregor.

Overall, the opinions vary on who the next challenger should be for the UFC 294 main event. While some believe Oliveira should get a second chance, others suggest waiting for the Poirier-Gaethje rematch winner. Meanwhile, Meshew thinks that a McGregor comeback would be the most lucrative option for the UFC. Regardless of who fights Makhachev next, one thing is certain: the next matchup will be a highly anticipated and exciting event for UFC fans.
