Throughout the final stages of his career representing the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Jorge Masvidal was fortunate enough to rack up considerable earnings. Known by his moniker “Gamebred,” Masvidal recently announced his retirement from the ring after an indisputable unanimous loss at UFC 287 to Gilbert Burns in April.
The ex-two-time title challenger as well as the “BMF” title holder declared two of the most important things he learned during his career – the total amount he was paid, as well as how well UFC fighters are cared for medically. Speaking with NFL wide receiver Tyreek Hill on It Needed to Be Said, Masvidal stated, “I’d say right around $5 million.”
Moreover, he added, “The UFC takes care of us to an extent with medicals, right? So if anything happens to you at the fight or in preparation for the fight, we’re very well taken care of — and even after the fight. Anything that happens in the gym, we’re very well taken care of. But we don’t have insurance outside of that like a dental plan, but anything related to fighting or training they take care of.”
Masvidal had 22 matches in the octagon, but it was his sterling 2019 campaign that turned him into a megastar, knocking out Darren Till and Ben Askren and earning a doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden. This string of success provided Masvidal with consecutive opportunities to vie for the welterweight title against then-kingpin Kamaru Usman.
Despite having an excellent showing, he ultimately lost both of those chances to claim UFC gold.
Subsequently, he competed against former friend turned foe Colby Covington in the main event of UFC 272 in March 2022, where he faced a unanimous decision defeat before ultimately calling it quits after his loss to Burns.
