Nate Diaz, a well-respected figure in the world of UFC, has made it clear that he does not consider Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje to be worthy competitors for the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC) “BMF” title.
The highly anticipated rematch between Poirier and Gaethje is set to ignite the octagon at UFC 291 on July 29 in Salt Lake City. Diaz, who previously battled for the inaugural title against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 244 in November 2019, spoke candidly about the upcoming 155-pound matchup.
During a seminar in Nashville, Diaz was quoted by Inside Fighting as saying, “I don’t believe they meet the criteria. Poirier and Gaethje, they’re both a bunch of dorks, aren’t they? I mean, what’s there to say?” It is worth noting that Diaz, who clashed with Tony Ferguson in the main event of UFC 279 last September, has since parted ways with UFC and is now set to face Jake Paul in a professional boxing bout on Aug. 6 in Dallas.
Pressed for his opinion on Masvidal’s possible retirement after his UFC 287 loss to Gilbert Burns in April, Diaz said that he would not be surprised if the “Gamebred” fighter made a comeback in the combat sports arena. “I don’t think he’s done,” Diaz observed. “I’m sure he’ll be back. At some point, he’s going to get bored.”
Overall, Diaz’s remarks suggest that he sets a high bar for competition in the UFC and does not shy away from criticizing those who do not meet his standards. His upcoming boxing fight with Paul has sparked considerable interest among fans and could pave the way for new challenges in his career as a combat sports athlete.
