Sergio Pettis’ triumph in the co-main event at Bellator 297 was a sight to behold, with his formidable defence of the Bellator bantamweight title bringing unparalleled joy – not only to himself but Anthony Pettis as well. With a commanding showing, the younger Pettis brother thwarted Patricio Pitbull’s attempt at history in his bid to become the first three-division champion of a major MMA organization.
Sergio earned a five-round decision over Pitbull, with the judges’ scores overwhelmingly in favour of the champion, reading 50-45, 50-45, and 49-46, thus, leaving Pitbull crestfallen. The event leading up to Friday night saw Patricio Pitbull dominate the headlines, thanks to his extraordinary effort to etch his name in the history books.
The bout was also Sergio Pettis’ first since December 2021, and with the torn ACL he suffered in 2022, the odds seemed stacked against him. Nevertheless, the elder Pettis brother stayed optimistic about his sibling’s chances of waltzing through to victory.
