Ahead of PFL 5 in Atlanta on Friday, both Jon Jones and Francis Ngannou knew that their paths would cross and a faceoff was inevitable. Despite the anticipation, Jones remained level-headed and refrained from causing unnecessary drama, given the circumstances of their encounter. While holding onto the UFC title, Jones acknowledged that Ngannou left the promotion in pursuit of other interests and a new contract with the PFL.
With the unlikely possibility of the two fighters facing off in the Octagon, Jones remained respectful towards Ngannou and even expressed his excitement in meeting him. The faceoff between the two was slightly tense but still ended with a friendly handshake, much to the delight of the Atlanta crowd.
Both fighters, however, continue to take aim at each other through social media and interviews, knowing that a fight between them is unlikely, despite the desire for it. Even with the talks and banter, Jones remains confident in his abilities and knows that he is the better fighter.
Ngannou, on the other hand, is currently focused on a potential boxing match and will eventually return to the MMA scene with plans to debut in the PFL in 2024. While negotiations are ongoing for Jones’ next fight under the UFC banner, he may potentially face ex-heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic at Madison Square Garden in November.
With all that in mind, Jones is content with brokering a peaceful deal and not escalating any drama between him and Ngannou, given that there’s no way to settle the rivalry in the Octagon at this point.
