Vadim Nemkov retains title at Bellator 297 after outstriking Yoel Romero who appeared sluggish

Despite Vadim Nemkov’s desire to finish his opponent, Yoel Romero refused to go down, forcing Nemkov to display a masterful performance for a little under 25 minutes in the main event of Bellator 297. Although Romero was extremely tough, he was barely able to launch any offensive maneuvers which allowed Nemkov to strike at will during most exchanges.

Following an exhilarating bout that had all three judges unanimously declare Nemkov as the winner with a score of 49-46, Nemkov addressed the media to express his satisfaction at dispatching such a vaunted opponent.

Nemkov started the match with an intense assault as he repeatedly engaged Romero with his jaw-dropping lead jab, attempting head kicks in quick succession. Romero, who is known to be deadly against opponents attacking him, failed to launch any offensive maneuvers as Nemkov maintained constant pressure.

Nemkov’s tactical game plan was to outpace Romero with lead lefts and powerful rights behind them. His agility and output put Romero in a tight spot, making the Olympic silver medalist wrestler struggle. Meanwhile, Bellator recorded that Romero launched a mere 10 strikes by the end of round two.

Nemkov relentlessly pushed forward, throwing several shots at Romero which eventually pushed him to the cage. Romero’s defense involved protecting himself with his hands and utilizing his durability to soak up the strikes.

While Romero managed to get Nemkov to notice him in the third round, he struggled to gain an upper hand. Additionally, when Romero attempted to bait Nemkov with a pretend injury; the latter remained unfazed, not taking the bait.

Nemkov’s strategy of consistent jabs and punishing rights confounded Romero who failed to attack Nemkov effectively. The latter continued to engage Romero, and his punches found their home while uncomfortable onlookers saw that Romero’s right eye was nearly shutting due to the blows he had taken from Nemkov.

Towards the end of the match, Romero managed to secure a takedown. However, this move came too late and failed to sway the fight’s ultimate outcome. Victory in the bout now means that Nemkov has held his title four times, extending his Bellator light heavyweight title defense record. However, there could be a concerning challenge for Nemkov in the form of not having tough enough competition at 205 pounds in Bellator left to battle.
