Diego Lima, head coach and manager for Charles Oliveira at Chute Boxe, is pushing for a rematch between his fighter and UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev after Oliveira’s recent knockout victory over Beneil Dariush at UFC 289.
Lima stated that this is the “logical” fight to make as Makhachev is the top-ranked 155-pound fighter and has beaten the other four fighters in the top five “overwhelmingly”. Lima also mentioned that it is Charles’ dream to fight in Brazil and believes that Charles deserves a belt in the country.
Lima acknowledges that anything can happen in the UFC and suggests that a fight at 170lbs with the lightweight title shot guaranteed for next year in Brazil could be a possibility.
Lima admitted that he has watched Oliveira’s loss to Makhachev many times and agrees that Charles did not perform to the best of his abilities. However, Lima refuses to make excuses and gives credit to Makhachev for winning.
Lima believes that if Oliveira is able to execute what they have planned for Makhachev in a rematch, there will be another stoppage on his record. Despite Oliveira’s impressive submission record, Lima states that they have a lot planned for the striking and Oliveira is very strong and “attacking so well”.
As for whether or not the UFC will grant Oliveira a shot at Makhachev’s lightweight crown, that remains to be seen. UFC President Dana White did not comment on the possibility at a recent press conference, leaving everything up in the air for now.
