According to John Gotti III, his recent exhibition boxing match against Floyd Mayweather Jr. was an unfair bout, as he feels that he was targeted because of his family’s notoriety. Gotti explained to journalist Ariel Helwani that he believes the combination of his family’s reputation and Mayweather’s reputation has led to his criticism.
During the fight, the two fighters began taunting each other, which led to the referee stopping the exhibition in the sixth round due to unsportsmanlike behaviour. Gotti believes that Mayweather was allowed to taunt Gotti’s fans and section without being warned, accusing the referee of being biased. Although Gotti acted emotionally by attacking Mayweather after the bout was stopped, he believes that he was robbed of his best rounds and that the referee stopped the fight prematurely.
The Association of Boxing Commissions rules do allow referees to stop bouts due to unsportsmanlike behaviour, although Gotti feels that it was unreasonable in his case. He believes that the referee stopped the fight because Gotti was having success against Mayweather, and he thinks that he was punished unfairly by the Florida commission, which suspended him for six months. He feels that the commission failed to secure the ring before the fight and didn’t do their job.
Gotti and his team are working to lift the suspension, and he hopes to rematch Mayweather later this year. He wants to ensure that people don’t get the wrong idea about what happened and that his actions were a result of Mayweather’s comments during the bout. Gotti stated that he and Mayweather have moved on, and it’s business.
