The highly anticipated RIZIN featherweight championship bout between Kleber Koike and Chihiro Suzuki was thrown into disarray at the weigh-ins in Sapporo, Japan on Friday. Koike, the former champion, came in just under a pound over the required weight limit, making him ineligible to retain his title.
Suzuki, on the other hand, successfully made weight for the contest and now has the opportunity to claim the 145-pound title if he defeats Koike on Saturday. According to Sakakibara’s social media post, the featherweight championship will become vacant should Koike emerge victorious.
This will be Koike’s first fight since his non-title defeat to Patricio Pitbull in December last year. Despite once being crowned the KSW featherweight champion, Koike was stripped of the belt in 2017 after failing to make weight.
Meanwhile, Suzuki has been on a winning streak, claiming five straight victories under the RIZIN banner, and will be hoping to continue this momentum and secure the featherweight championship title at the Makomanai Sekisui Heim Arena.
