Gilbert Burns, a Brazilian mixed martial artist, outclassed hometown hero, Jorge Masvidal for the first time in his career in front of Jorge’s crowd at the UFC 287. Burns secured a unanimous decision, scoring 30-27 twice and 29-28 on Saturday night by outstriking.
Masvidal on the feet and completing takedowns to rack up control time. In the third round, it even looked like Masvidal was a punch or two away from being finished. However, with his resilience, he survived, but Burns managed to get another takedown and control the action.

While commenting on Gilbert Burns’ and Masvidal’s fight, Kenny Florian expressed that Masvidal could not figure out Burns’ tactics as there was nothing fancy about Burns’ strategy, just persistence, pressure, and consistency. Florian thought, “Great to see him (Burns) succeed in this sport after grinding for so long, Burns moves up the ladder again and gets closer to a title shot.”
After Masvidal announced his retirement, everyone bid the fighter a warm goodbye and appreciated his contribution to the game. Aljamain Sterling thought that Father Time catches up with everyone eventually and praised Masvidal as a real OG of the fight game.
